This lab boasts an online gas analysis system that can be used at rest or during exercise testing and coupled with multiple devices.

Water Immersion Laboratory

Our water immersion laboratory consists of a cold CryoSpa ice bath combined with a hot ThermoSpa, enabling us to perform contrast bathing which is beneficial for both short-term and longer-term recovery.

AlterG Room

Our AlterG anti-gravity treadmill uses air pressure to enable individuals to walk or run at a lower percentage of their body weight. This is beneficial for rehabilitation connected to mobility, strength, natural movement and fitness, while minimising stress on the body.

Respiratory Laboratory

State-of-the-art equipment enables our experts to perform a range of respiratory measurements, as well as carbon monoxide and bronchial testing.

Biopsychology Laboratory

Primarily used to measure the bodily responses to certain psychological stimuli, the lab's systems and software provide a flexible tool for a substantial amount of life science research. Current measurements captured include skin temperature, pulse rate, ECG and respiratory rate, with the capability for many others, including galvanic skin response.

Nutritional Preparation Laboratory

Using our precision measuring equipment, sports drinks and other supplements are prepared with precision for athletes and research projects.

Exercise Studio

This multi-purpose exercise studio is a versatile space that allows for a range of activities to be undertaken, including dance and fitness classes, circuit training and exercise rehabilitation programmes. It will also have an important role to play in chronic disease related research programmes in areas such as cancer, cardiac rehabilitation, active ageing, and obesity.

Lecture Theatre

Human Movement Research Laboratory

This space is designed to allow complete biomechanical analysis of athletic performance. Cameras around the lab facilitate 3D motion capture allowing the examination of every detail of human movement. Images can be fully synchronised with up to 12 Kistler floor force plates to assess groundb reaction forces, electrical activity of muscle and the visual focus of the performer. This data is then used to adapt technique and training programmes to improve performance.

Physiology Laboratory (4)

The pulsar treadmills in this laboratory have the capacity to reach 40km/h as well as a gradient of - 25% and +25% with the option to reverse the belt for downhill running, with participants harnessed in for safety. Students learn to perform exercise tests such as assessment of VO2 Max, running economy, and lactate profiling.Analysers measure blood lactate and blood glucose concentrations with students able to look at multiple samples and get accurate results in seconds.

Lecture Theatre

Sport Performance Laboratory

With a customised treadmill able to accommodate runners, cyclists, skiers as well as those using a wheelchair, this laboratory allows for high performance sport and exercise physiology testing.Additionally, our biochemistry analyser provides us with accurate, instant measures of blood glucose and lactate with the capacity to analyse many other chemistries and performance indicators.
